• Welcome to the Coalition for American Heritage.

We support and advance our nation’s commitment to heritage preservation.

Farewell, friends. Thank you for joining forces over the past seven years to defend and advance our nation’s commitment to historic preservation. As the Coalition for American Heritage, we brought together more than 350,000 advocates from all 50 states to accomplish unparalleled results in Washington during turbulent times. The Coalition was fit for purpose in the wake of the 2016 election, and we concluded our operations at the end of 2023.

Together, we successfully fought back against daunting political and regulatory threats. When politicians tried to chip away at America’s bedrock preservation laws, we stood firm. We stopped proposed harmful changes to the National Register regulations, successfully fought back against attempts to make major infrastructure projects exempt from Section 106 review, and provided expert testimony that helped hold the line on protections for cultural heritage across the country.

During times of unprecedented Congressional gridlock, we proved that historic preservation is a unifying, bipartisan issue. Our multi-year campaign to pass the African American Burial Grounds Preservation Act succeeded with overwhelming support from both sides of the aisle, and because of your advocacy the National Park Service is now creating a grant program that will support the identification, preservation, study, and respect for African American Burial Grounds for years to come.

Along the way, we continued to build support for the nation’s historic preservation program, resulting in unprecedented funding for state and tribal historic preservation offices. We look forward to seeing the results of our efforts unfold over the next few years as the Army Corps replaces its Appendix C regulations, agencies across the government improve their tribal consultation policies, and the National Historic Preservation Act is reauthorized.

We are grateful to the Society for Historical Archaeology and the American Anthropological Association for their sustained and generous financial support for our work. The law and government affairs firm Cultural Heritage Partners (CHP) has managed the Coalition since its founding, and our CHP team will continue to advocate for our shared values through our work for clients nationwide. We look forward to finding new ways to partner with all of you to help protect cultural heritage under threat.
